We foster collaboration among the best minds from research labs, classrooms, and beyond to advance innovation and entrepreneurship education and to provide unique opportunities for STEM students and researchers to fully realize their potential to improve the world.

    Since our founding in 1995, we’ve supported over 3,000 teams of science and technology inventors and innovators, and nurtured thousands of their startups, reaching millions of people in over 50 countries with ground-breaking technological advancements in fields such as biomedicine and healthcare, sustainable energy and materials, and solutions for low-resource settings.

    Our recent and anticipated growth has created an opportunity for a Director of People and Culture, who will play a strong, hands-on leadership role supporting both strategic and operational goals while fostering employee engagement, an inclusive culture, and an equitable organization that lives our values. Evolving and scaling our people strategies, processes, and practices and instilling conscientiousness and a commitment to excellence is critical to our success. The Director reports to the Chief of Staff.


    • Manages all facets of human resources; professional development and learning; and internal programs, policies and processes that drive and support the creation of an equitable, inclusive workplace. The Director will collaborate with senior leaders, consultants, and managers throughout the organization. Components include:
      • Talent acquisition
      • Onboarding
      • Compensation design and implementation
      • Performance planning and review processes
      • Support of the VentureWell employee survey and action planning process
      • Education and learning including the prioritization, design, and implementation of equity and inclusion skills development, management training, and other professional development initiatives
      • Benefit design, communication, administration, and resources for employees
      • Embedding our commitment to equity in all HR processes, EEO and Affirmative Action compliance and reporting
      • Employee Handbook updates – compliance, optimizing employee and VentureWell needs
      • Employee relations and support
    • Leads people- and culture-focused components of VentureWell’s efforts to embed its values throughout the organization and our programming 
    • Ensures ongoing assessment, enhancement, alignment, and legal compliance of all HR processes, policies, and practices consistent with our commitment to equity 
    • Partners with all staff and board members to evolve, steward, and cultivate VentureWell’s culture as we grow and expand
    • Develops, implements, and maintains systems, programs, and policies and that optimize attracting, hiring, and engagement of a high performing team
    • Supports managers and employees with performance management systems, coaching, and conflict resolution
    • Manages execution of competing priorities, balancing short-term tactical implementation with longer-term strategic goals
    • Models engaged leadership and management excellence
    • Crisis management, including safety programs and policies        


    • At least 7 years’ experience in both HR and management; familiarity with non-profits helpful
    • Thorough knowledge of human resource management principles and best practices, from compliance to strategic engagement, and experience with implementing and utilizing HR technology (ATS, HRIS, etc.) 
    • Significant experience advancing equity as a mission-critical facet of HR, including significant employee engagement; inclusive behaviors and organizational culture; identification, coaching, and management of equity-related competencies and skills in the workplace; and recruiting a workforce that is diverse by gender, race, class, and sexual orientation, among other important group identities
    • Exemplary track record of managing and leading high-performing teams that included a rich mix across gender, race, class, and sexual orientation
    • Excellent organizational, coaching, and leadership skills
    • Outstanding verbal and written skills in the following: communication, emotional intelligence, conflict resolution, and interpersonal relationships and dynamics
    • Knowledge of how race, racism, class, classism, gender, sexism, and related equity issues show up in the work of mission driven organizations and their programs
    • Exemplary ethical standards, discretion, and an excellent track record of managing confidential matters and developing trust with colleagues at all levels 
    • Telecommuting: This is a full-time position and the Director must be able to spend at least 3 days per week in our MA office
