Toronto-based architectural photographer, David Kaufman, has made nine trips to Poland and western Ukraine to photograph the remnants of Jewish life that remain following the destruction of local Jewish communities under the Nazis and in the Soviet era. Kaufman's large scale, highly detailed images of synagogues and cemeteries, architecture and streetscapes, are a testament to the rich, varied lives led by Jews in cities and towns over centuries and a reminder of the challenges in preserving Jewish material culture in countries that have few Jews today and meager resources. On exhibit in the Yiddish Book Center's Brechner Gallery April 28, 2019, through October 2019. This event is free and open to the public.
