Two of South Africa’s national dance forms come together in a captivating program reflecting the vibrant diversity, complex history, and inventive creativity of the South African people. The Gumboots, clad in wellies, tell the story of migrant men in Stimela the Musical—a stirring and theatrical presentation using (gumboot) dance, which began as a form of resistance by black miners. Real Actions Pantsula is born of street culture in South Africa’s black townships, taking its inspiration from Sotho dances and American jazz and hip-hop. Pre-show talk in the lobby at 6:15 p.m. with Asst. Professor of Theater Judyie Al-Bilali. Hip-Hop demonstration in the lobby by NYC’s JohnnieCruise Mercer and local dance crew, Crazefaze, starting at 6:45 p.m. South African prix fixe dinner available at the UClub before the concert.
