Amherst is the site of many interesting buildings and
historic landmarks. Since the 1700's, our town has been
home to many colorful figures -- some well known and
some not so famous. If a particular Amherst resident
interests you, we've included links to other sites for
additional reading.
As you proceed on the tour, you'll see photos of well-known
buildings and learn some interesting details about their
history, and read some fascinating anecdotes about the
people and places in Amherst. Take this quote from the
Amherst Record (1890) about the new Town Hall building:
"We should bear in mind the fact that the architect
of the Cathedral at Milan, backed by the wealth of the
universe, could not have designed a village horse-shed
that would meet with universal favor at the hands of
the citizens of Amherst."
More than 100 years later, our discussion over the
parking garage must seem eerily familiar.
